How Does Dumpster Rental Work for the City of Cleveland?
City of Cleveland roll-off or front load dumpsters can be rented for use within the City of Cleveland. Each dumpster comes with it's own service fees and frequencies of service. Before requesting a dumpster, we recommend reviewing the information below to assist with your decision and understanding of the process.
Process Overview City of Cleveland Dumpster Rental (6-10 business day process):
- Review Dumpster Selection options and select the dumpster type and size best for your project.
- Complete request form at bottom of this page.
- Wait for confirmation email with inspection date.
- Inspection of the property will be scheduled three business days after request is received.
- Once inspection is completed and approved, you will receive a copy of the Service Agreement that must be reviewed, signed and returned to our Division of Waste coordinator. (If the signed form is not received within seven business days of submission, your request will be closed and you must submit a new one).
- After receipt of the signed Service Agreement, your dumpster delivery will be scheduled within 3-5 business days.
- Fill your dumpster. (Review our "Frequently Asked Questions" for any waste that cannot be disposed of in our dumpsters).
- At end of agreement, dumpster will be picked up on the date specified.

Dumpster Selection
Please review the information below to decide which dumpster may be best for you. When reviewing the options for a dumpster please consider the type of project, average weight of disposed items and frequency of disposal.
Roll Off
Roll-off dumpsters available from City of Cleveland come in three sizes: 20 yard, 30 yard and 40 yard. Roll-off dumpsters can be rented for short-term leases (7 days). Roll-off dumpsters earn their name because they can roll directly off the bed of a truck to be delivered. These dumpsters are larger capacity typically used for clearing construction sites, large landscaping projects, commercial site clearings etc.

Front Load
Front Load dumpsters available from the City of Cleveland come in three sizes: 2 yard, 4 yard, 6 yard and 8 yard. Front load dumpsters can be rented for long term leases and allow you to choose the frequency of your service. Please note amounts charged are per service with invoices being due monthly. Front load dumpsters are medium capacity with their most common uses explained below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Please review the following frequently asked questions for more information on how to best utilize your dumpster.
When choosing a dumpster location, you should:
- Select a level surface.
- Avoid areas near pedestrian walkways or vehicle traffic.
- Leave at least 40 feet length available for dumpster drop-off.
- Select a surface free of debris and obstructions (low hanging wires, tree branches, etc).
For driveway placement, please be sure:
- The driveway is at least ten (10) feet wide.
- There are no water spigots sticking out from the home (towards the driveway).
- There are no awnings hanging over the driveway.
- There are no trees hanging over the driveway.
- There are no fences blocking or surrounding the driveway.
- There is at least 15 feet vertical clearance (from the ground up).
Placement in grassy areas will only be approved if:
- It is a commercial lot (requestor must be the owner).
- It is an EMPTY residential lot (requestor must be the owner).
- The lot can be directly accessed.
- Dumpster placement does not interfere with neighboring lots.
While City of Cleveland dumpsters are intended for disposal, not all items are eligible for disposal in a City of Cleveland dumpster. Ineligible materials include:
- Batteries or auto parts (regular batteries too or just car batteries?)
- Tires
- Drums, liquids or chemicals
- Appliances or electronics
- Pavers
- Concrete
- Roof Shingles
- Asbestos (found in automobile clutches, brake pads, corrugated sheeting, imported cement pipes, roofing materials and vinyl tiles)
- Hazardous Waste (please review Hazardous Waste Guidelines under Disposal Tips for examples)
To be sure our trucks can service your dumpster, our trucks must be able to access and empty the dumpster. For us to easily access your dumpster, please be sure to:
- Move vehicles or other obstacles blocking the dumpster
- Make sure gates or fences are unlocked or provide our driver with any passwords or access codes needed to reach your dumpster at least one business day before scheduled service
Once your agreement is completed, a City of Cleveland truck will retrieve the dumpster. To prepare for dumpster pickup, please:
- Ensure items in your dumpster are evenly distributed and not overflowing.
- Do not exceed the maximum tonnage allowed (10 tons).
- Move vehicles or other obstacles blocking the dumpster.
- Make sure gates or fences are unlocked or provide our driver with any passwords (or submit any codes needed to access the property to our coordinator at least one business day in advance).
Please complete the request form at the bottom of the page and select "Extend my current service agreement." A Division of Waste employee will reach out to you with more information. This request must be submitted at least two business days before your current agreement end date to be considered.
Please note, a dumpster extension request is not guaranteed to be approved. Approval depends on dumpster service/removal/placement schedule.

A dumpster request can be denied for the following reasons:
- Driver is smaller than ten (10) foot width
- Ground is unstable
- Immovable obstacles blocking request placement locations (cars, trees, etc.)
- Placement would create a hazard (blocking traffic, area not well lit, etc.)
- Placement would cause a public nuisance
- The requesting party does not own the property they are requesting placement on
