What is a food system?

A local food system includes urban farms and community gardens, farmers markets, grocery stores, and food rescue and composting organizations. At the Cleveland Department of Public Health, we're building a more just and resilient local food system by collaborating with residents, community partners, and other city departments to improve healthy food access, strengthen food-related infrastructure, and address the root causes of food apartheid. Our work recognizes food as a key driver of health and equity.
