Superior Midway
Project Overview
The Superior Avenue segment of the Cleveland Midway is from Public Square to East 55th Street. The Superior Avenue project proposes a continuous raised bikeway median. Superior Avenue is located along an RTA priority corridor, facilitating multimodal travel and convenient transfers from foot to bike to transit.
The center-running bikeway is designed to be a premier bike riding experience, providing a safe and comfortable east-west connection between downtown and near east side neighborhoods for riders of all ages, abilities, and socioeconomic levels.
Overall project goals include:
- Prioritize safety & accessibility for people walking, biking, driving, and taking transit
- Provide a separated, sidewalk level, all ages and abilities bikeway
- Support current businesses and future economic development
- Enhance the natural and aesthetic environment of the Superior Avenue corridor
- Encourage physical activity through active transportation to meet daily needs
Why Superior Avenue?
Superior Avenue is one of the City’s highest crash corridors. Superior east of I-90 is the third highest corridor for fatal and serious injury crashes in Cleveland. Calmer traffic means improved safety for people walking, biking, driving, and taking transit.
Superior Midway will provide a crucial connection to the growing bike network to downtown and many east side neighborhoods. You can learn more about our bikeway vision network on our Cleveland Moves webpage.
This project also aligns with our Vision Zero commitment to end crashes that result in fatal and serious injuries. In the last 5 years (2018-2022), there have been 20 crashes resulting in serious injury and 3 crashes resulting in fatality along this corridor. The large majority of these crashes have occurred east of I-90 where the speed limit increases from 25 to 35 mph. We can reduced the number and severity of these crashes by implementing proven safety tools.
As part of the Complete and Green Streets Program, the Transportation Infrastructure Advisory Committee (TIAC) reviewed the project. This committee provides design input at the earliest stages of a project's planning. This helps shape projects that add more greenery, improve safety, and create better transportation options for all users.

Project FAQs
This webpage will be updated regularly with Frequently Asked Questions as the project develops.
A Complete Street is a street designed for everyone — people of all ages and abilities, whether they’re walking, biking, rolling, taking transit, or driving. These streets make it safer and easier for everyone to get around. Complete Streets can include features like sidewalks, bike lanes or paths, safer crosswalks, enhanced bus stops, and other improvements that help people travel comfortably and safely.
A Green Street adds environmentally friendly features such as street trees, landscaping, recycled materials, and systems that manage stormwater in a sustainable way.
Together, Complete and Green Streets help make our neighborhoods safer, greener, and more inviting places to live and travel.
