We made changes to Prospect and Huron to create safer streets for everyone

Streets for People: Prospect/Huron

In June 2025, we restriped Huron and Prospect Street between Ontario and E 9th Street. This project reflects traffic patterns typically put in place by public safety before games and events at Progressive and Rocket Fields. This project:

  • Reduces the number of vehicle lanes that pedestrians must cross
  • Adds a new crosswalk on the west side of the intersection of Prospect and Huron
  • Adds a 2-way separated bike lane to both streets
  • Opens up street-level space for restaurant patios, pocket parks, and pedestrians
  • Creates a pair of one-way streets - eastbound on Huron and westbound on Prospect
  • Will add asphalt art, painted by local artists, to the street

Neighborhood Context: Downtown

Downtown has some of the highest volumes of people walking, biking, and riding transit in the City of Cleveland.

As part of Cleveland Moves, our 5-year multimodal transportation plan, we looked at the level of stress for pedestrian crossings citywide. Crossings in Downtown are often much longer than in other Cleveland neighborhoods, often requiring pedestrians to cross 6 or more lanes. Converting Prospect and Huron to one-way pairs allows us to reduce the number of vehicle travel lanes that pedestrians cross, while also freeing up space where we know there are often large crowds headed to concerts, games, and other events.

Multiple Downtown streets are included on our bikeway vision network as part of Cleveland Moves. National research and local polling show us that more people will ride bikes if there are high comfort bikeways - such as separated bike lanes - available on their route. Bikeways will be included in multiple upcoming Downtown projects, including:

  • Cleveland Midway: Superior Avenue
  • Memorial Bridges Loop
  • Mandel Community Trail
  • Payne Avenue

Project Updates

We'll be working with local artists to add asphalt art to this project, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies' Asphalt Art Initiative. Learn more about the initiative on the Bloomberg website.

Construction began on this quick build project in mid-June 2025, and is expected to be completed before the end of the month.
