Vacuum it once or twice a year to remove any dust or cobwebs. This will cut down on false alarms. Most battery powered smoke detectors will 'chirp' sporadically when the battery is weak. The Fire Department recommends that batteries be changed twice a year, perhaps two personally significant days, or when you change your clocks in the spring or fall.

There is a test button on the detector. If you push it and the detector makes a sound, the battery is OK. The standard recommendation is to change batteries twice a year, regardless of their condition.
