City of Cleveland Hosts 9th Annual Sustainable Cleveland Summit September 27-28

Conference focuses on Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s vision to build economic, social and environmental well-being for all

CLEVELAND –More than 500 participants from around Northeast Ohio will gather at Cleveland Public Auditorium September 27-28, 2017 to help create healthier, greener and more equitable communities in Cleveland. The 9th annual Sustainable Cleveland Summit is part of Sustainable Cleveland 2019, Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s 10-year strategic vision to create a ‘Green City on a Blue Lake.’ The initiative engages everyone to work together to develop a thriving and resilient Cleveland that leverages its assets to build economic, social and environmental well-being for all.

“A focus on sustainability helps ensure our city’s longevity,” said Mayor Jackson. “We are committed to seeing this work through and look forward to Clevelanders from all walks of life sharing in the benefits of a sustainable Cleveland.”

This year’s summit will build off past accomplishments and accelerate Cleveland’s positive momentum in developing healthy, vibrant, and equitable communities. The keynote speaker is Mark Tercek, President & CEO of The Nature Conservancy. 

“Sustainable Cleveland 2019 provides actionable tools to make smart, sustainable choices at home, work and in the community,” said Chief of Sustainability Matt Gray. “The Summit brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate our successes and chart the path forward in creating a more sustainable city.”

The 2017 Summit presents a unique opportunity to crowdsource expertise from hundreds of participants to collectively:

• Help update the Cleveland Climate Action Plan, which incorporates the topics of: Energy, Water and Land Use, Community Engagement, Waste, and Transportation. 
• Find ways to accelerate progress in climate action that also advances equitable outcomes in health, access to green jobs, resiliency, and more
• Celebrate the Year of Vibrant Green Space and work to continue its expansion
• Develop plans for the Year of Vital Neighborhoods in 2018
• Focus on what can be accomplished by June 22, 2019, the 50-year anniversary of the infamous Cuyahoga River burning

Cleveland is celebrating 2017 as the Year of Vibrant Green Space. The City encourages citizens to participate in various events supporting environmental education, plant trees and rain gardens, purchase local foods, visit parks and more. In April, Mayor Jackson, a longtime proponent of local environmental sustainability,–with the help of residents, businesses, government and community organizations –committed to grow the city’s tree canopy from 19 to 30 percent by 2040, including 50,000 new trees by 2020.
