Deadline for Businesses to Apply for Major Event Waiver Approaching

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

CLEVELAND – The deadline for businesses to apply for the Ohio Division of Liquor Control “major event” waiver permit is March 21, 2016. Under a recently enacted Ohio statute, holders of certain Ohio liquor permits (A-1, A-1-A, A-le, A-2 and D) may apply for a “major event” waiver that would allow the holder to extend service time for beer or intoxicating liquor from 1:00 a.m. or 2:30a.m. to 4:00a.m. the following day during a major event.

Under the provisions of this new law, the Republican National Convention would be considered a “major event”; thus, certain permit holders may apply for this waiver subject to the following conditions:

  • The location of the permit holder must be in Cuyahoga County (location of the RNC) or a county contiguous to Cuyahoga (Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit).
  • The duration of the waiver will be from Sunday, July 17 thru Thursday, July 21, 2016.
  • For businesses inside the City of Cleveland the permit holder must submit their request to Cleveland City Hall by mail, email (*) or they can deliver to Susan Bungard in the Law Department, room # 106.

The permit holder must complete the attached application and submit it to the Chief Executive Officer (Mayor or City Manager) of the municipal corporation in which the permit holder's premises is located or the fiscal officer of the township in which the permit holder's premises is located.

The City of Cleveland will review all applications and compile a list of the applicants to submit to the Division of Liquor Control. By June 17, 2016, the Division of Liquor Control will review the list and determine whether to issue a waiver. The division may remove the name of a permit holder from the list for good cause.
