Asa V. Newman

In celebration of Mr. Asa V. Newman's 97th birthday, Mayor Frank G. Jackson presented him with a proclamation designating September 21, 2015, as Asa V. Newman Day in Cleveland in honor of his life’s accomplishments.

A Cleveland native, Mr. Newman was born in 1918. He is a Tuskegee Airman and a member of the 99th Pursuit Squadron. He served in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Newman grew up on E. 68th Place at the corner of Belvidere Avenue in Cleveland and graduated from East High School in June of 1936. He later moved to Chicago with plans to attend college but that goal was prolonged due to World War II. Newman graduated from Chicago’s Roosevelt University in 1959 and worked for the University of Chicago as a Chief Cyclotron Operator in the Nuclear Energy Research Department and he was later employed with the Fermi Labs in Batavia, Illinois. Mr. Newman retired in 1980.
