Annual Youth Summit
Over 2,600 Cleveland K-12 students and their parents attended Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s 9th Annual Youth Summit and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s (CMSD) Back to School Fair held at the Cleveland Public Auditorium on Lakeside Avenue. Mayor Jackson was joined by CMSD CEO Eric Gordon and City of Cleveland Chief of Education Monyka Price for brief remarks about the upcoming 2015-2016 school year.
This year’s 2015 summit keynote speakers were Blaine Griffin, Director, Community Relations Board and Ellis Johnson, Commander, Community Policing. The goal of the Summit and Back to School Fair is to empower young people with fundamental skills they can use in their daily lives that will translate into a successful school year. This year’s event highlighted Conduct, Courage, Character and Community to encourage building a stronger community.
Youth who attended this educational and fun-filled day of events participated in various workshops, group discussions, and listened to presentations. Information about City services, resources, transportation and school assignments were available. In addition, all attendees received a free lunch and a free grade-appropriate backpack with school supplies and a bookmark. Informational handouts about CMSD schools, education, health and wellness programs were also provided. Attendees enjoyed special presentations by the CMSD All Star Cheerleaders and musical entertainment by Kevin Conwell and the Footprints.
