Mayor Jackson Swears-In Merle Gordon as Director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health

CLEVELAND – Today, Mayor Frank G. Jackson administered the Oath of Office to Merle Gordon, who will serve as the City of Cleveland’s Director of the Department of Public Health. Director Gordon comes to the City of Cleveland after having previously served as the Director of Government Affairs and Exchange Operations for HealthSpan Integrated Care. In this capacity, she was responsible for ensuring that all Federal regulations and requirements of the Affordable Care Act and health insurance marketplace were satisfied.

Director Gordon is a former City of Cleveland Councilwoman and Chair of both the Public Health Committee and Economic Development Committee. She was elected in February of 1997 and served until May of 2005. Director Gordon has formerly served as the Director of Community Programs and Public Affairs for HealthSpan Integrated Care and as the Director of Government Affairs for the Cleveland Clinic.

She has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Housing Policy from Hampshire College, a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and has studied healthcare management at Case Western Reserve University.

Director Gordon currently resides in Cleveland’s Shaker Square neighborhood.
