Why do fire engines respond to car accidents, even when they didn't look serious?
An accident does not have to look bad to cause injuries needing an emergency response. Firefighters check for fire and environmental hazards- like gas, motor oil, or transmission fluid leaks- and block the scene to protect emergency responders from being hit by cars while they work.

No. Because of the high-paced action at fire stations and since fire fighters have to handle emergencies, we don't allow people to remain in stations for safety reasons.

How do I become a firefighter?
About every two years the city has a firefighter's exam, which includes a written test and a physical agility test. Candidates are then put on a list ranked by their scores, and hired as openings become available in groups of approximately 50. Academy classes are 4 months long which includes a 4 week class to become EMT basic certified. For more information, see the Fire tab on the City's Safety Careers page.

What can I do to prevent fire in my home?
Here are some good tips:
- Limit the use of extensions cords
- Keep cloths and rags away from lamps, heaters and stoves
- Never leave your stove unattended.
- Never leave young children alone especially with open flames or matches in the house- children are mesmorized by fire
- Never throw cigarettes in the garbage, even if you think they are out
