Applicants must obtain at least an EMT-Basic Certification and be hired by Cleveland EMS before beginning Academy Training as an EMS Cadet.Cadet training is usually held Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but hours may vary based upon training needs. Cadets are required to take weekly written exams as well as a comprehensive final. They must pass a final physical fitness test during their evaluation phase which involves sit-ups, push-ups and a 1 ½ mile run (minimum passing requirements are determined by age). A minimum passing score of 80% or higher is required on all examinations. Cadets are prohibited from utilizing sick time until after their completion of Academy training.

EMS Cadet Four-phase Training Process

  • Orientation: In this initial three week phase, cadets are issued uniforms and equipment and instructed on the Academy’s rules, policies, and procedures. Cadets also receive training required for all City employees, and enroll in benefits programs.
  • Certification: Over the next eight weeks, cadets receive additional certification training and testing and are required to pass the City's Standard of Patient Care Protocol Examination.
  • Evaluation: For four to six weeks, cadets ride in ambulances with certified Field Training Officers and apply their education and training under the close guidance of experienced Paramedics.
  • Probation: Probation ends six months after hire. During this phase the cadet is released to the field as a functioning EMT.
