The Mayor's Office of Prevention, Intervention & Opportunity for Youth and Young Adults (PIOYYA) leads trauma-informed programs and initiatives to address the root causes of youth violence and helps community members develop resilience.
We coordinate closely with Neighborhood Resource and Recreation Centers to deliver trauma-informed programs and services to people at risk or experiencing violence.
Our Approach
Research shows that unaddressed trauma and toxic stress from violence serves as the root, biological cause of intergenerational adverse health, educational, economic, and behavioral problems, including violence, that overwhelmingly impacts big city urban poor, especially communities of color and youth ages 15 to 24.
We are focused on creating a network of support for youth and their families and providing them access or referrals to resources and critical services. We can help our residents build resilience and provide them with the tools they need to thrive.
The City’s Neighborhood Resource and Recreation Centers serve as a hub of activity and support for many of our youth and their families. The City is engaged in an effort to transform our recreation centers into trauma-informed care Neighborhood Resource and Recreation Centers (NRRCs) - places where our youth and families can readily acquire the support and services they need.
