Overview
Anthony P. Luke is the 17th Chief of the Cleveland Division of Fire.
The mission of the Cleveland Division of Fire is to protect life, property and the environment.
Beyond stopping and preventing the spread of fire, the Division responds to investigate fires, provide medical care, manage hazardous materials incidents, rescue operations and vehicle accidents.
Fire Safety Tips

Urban Mining
- Watch for groups hanging around vacant houses where there have been boards ripped off or doors kicked in. Those conducting "urban mining" may be stealing pipes. To report suspicious activity, call 9-1-1.
- If there is a strong smell of gas in the area, the Division of Fire should be called immediately. If there is no smell but suspicious activity is occurring, witnesses should call 9-1-1.
Winter Safety
- Make sure space heaters are never left unattended and kept at least three (3) inches away from flammable materials such as drapes. If you have a Christmas tree, be sure to water it to prevent it from becoming a fire hazard. When making holiday treats, never leave a stove unattended or allow children to cook unsupervised.
Smoke Alarms
- Regularly test all smoke alarms and change batteries when necessary.
- Practice an escape plan and establish a pre-determined meeting place outside the home in the event of a fire. Assistance is available from the Red Cross Operation Save-A-Life Program (216.361.5535).
